It’s Monday, and we’ve all made it back from the wild weekend in relatively good shape! A quick recap in pictures:

Gran Fondo

It rained. BUT, the guys braved the elements and finished (mostly) the 100 mile ride.

Brooklyn Half Marathon

The weather was perfect, and a great time (and a personal record!) was had by all.

The Great Googa Mooga

Pre show grilled oysters and champagne, then right up front to see the Flaming Lips and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Success!

Notice anything different about this blog? Of course you do! We’ve created a whole new look for this year, which is clean, easy to read, and just flat out adorable- if I do say so myself. Hope you think so too! Moving right along, let’s take a look at what else we’ve been up to. This weekend, various members of the Miz Mooz team will be performing the following grand feats of endurance:

The Gran Fondo Bike Race

So, if this video showed the laymen and not just the super stars, you’d probably find us loitering by the refreshment table, walking our bikes up hills, and wondering why the heck did we sign up for this torture!?! It was mostly about the spandex outfits.

The Brooklyn Half Marathon

For the second year, Miz Mooz will be represented in the Brooklyn Half Marathon! Of course, the best part will be after crossing the finish line in Coney Island, and enjoying a celebratory Nathan’s hot dog.

The Great Googa Mooga

A mini food festival, heavy on entertainment, this requires another power of endurance. Namely, the ability to eat lots and lots of delicious food, while navigating looong lines and dodging hipsters. Also, it’s free! The tunes are going to be just as rockin as the food, we’re especially stoked to see The Flaming Lips and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

So, there you have it! Expect a full report (including pics of the spandex clad bikers) next week, and tell us what you’re up to these days!

The Vegas Diaries

A little recap of our February trip to Las Vegas for market, in which we venture off the Strip in search of civilization. Featuring Annie as “The Shoe Model” and introducing Melissa, as “Melissa”.

First stop, Neon Museum! Neon is second only to glitter on my list of favorite kitsch, and this place is incredible. It’s more neon sign graveyard than museum in the traditional sense, with a collection of rescued signs dating as far back as the 1930s. Behold:

This place is just screaming for a look book photo shoot, amirite?!!

Then we went to a show, which was not technically off the Strip, (but still something brand new, and I make the rules here so it counts). LE REVE. Woah. Prancing showgirls this was not. I couldn’t find a good clip to embed, so you’ll have to look at these pictures and imagine the following: water, fire, flying, acrobats, swimmers, divers, dancers, and clowns.

We were so exhausted after just watching the show, we went back to our rooms and ordered room service dinner at 11pm which we ate in bed.

For our last meal of the trip, we ventured to the legendary Lotus of Siam. Tucked away in a strip mall on a quiet (read: desolate and scary as all get out) stretch of road, this place has been lauded by those in the know as the Best. Thai. Ever. Needless to say, I was excited. The verdict: It was good, but certainly not the trancendent experience my tastebuds were ready for. A case of unreasonable expectations? Perhaps. I guess we’ll never know. Now, for the pics

Resolutions?

I haven’t made any New Year’s resolutions per se, but I do have a list of things that have been swirling around my brain for a while, and I want to get them out of my brain and into my real life (which reminds me of this song). They mostly involve attempting uncommon physical activities, performing crafty projects of all types, and eating weird things (did I mention I’m from Brooklyn?). Anyhoo, the first step is writing about them here for all of the interwebs to see, in order to invite public shaming should I not follow through.

Feats of Strength:

Trapeze! I mean, I already have some sparkly spandexy outfits, so why not?

AND:

Become a Wii Just Dance Master. Again, the sparkly spandexy outfits!

Master Crafter: I’m going to

build a coffee table in this shape out of other tables. But mine will be cuter, of course.

Happy New Year guys! I’m super happy to see 2012 fade to black and 2013 arrive all bright and shiny! First order of business this year is to spruce up my apartment, and here’s how I’m gonna do it:

Art! 20×200.com is pretty much the best thing to happen to my walls, ever. The site is full of super affordable prints (as low as $20), and there is really something for everyone! Word to the wise- you’ll want to browse for a while, so don’t click this link unless you have some time to kill!

DIY! I’m upping the ante on my crafting in 2013 to include some furniture altering. I’ve already painted a nightstand and a bookshelf, and the next order of business is to re purpose some ancient Ikea furniture, with the help of a brilliant website- Ikeahackers ! It’s like furniture building for dummies! As I don’t have a garage full of lumber at my disposal, I can’t start from scratch, but I can start from an Ikea piece. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Lighting! I will be playing the role of electrician, and installing a dimmer switch in my living room. Assuming I don’t electrocute myself or burn my building down or anything like that, I’ll have such a cozy space. I’m excited! But first, I need to do some dishes.

I love the holiday season, which for me starts on Halloween and runs right on through to my birthday in January, and I especially love the week leading up to Christmas. All the twinkly lights and sparkly outfits and cookies. So. Many. Cookies. Christmas music plays everywhere, and while I love it, one can only listen to Mariah Carey sing All I Want For Christmas is You so many times, ya know? So, I’ve gone in search of some fun new tunes, and behold, Esquivel and his space age bachelor pad. Here are my new favorite holiday songs, embedded for your listening pleasure. Ho Ho Ho!

Cookie Monsters!

So, this year Miz Mooz is teaming up with our pals at Infinityshoes.com to do a holiday cookie swap. What’s that, you say? Only the most amazing thing ever! Here’s how it works: 1)bake a bunch of delicious cookies 2) pass them around so all your friends get a few 3)eat eat eat 4)death by cookie. Brilliant! I love to bake and eat sweets, and here is the perfect excuse to do both! I’ve been scouring the good old world wide web for recipes (I plan to have the most delicious of the delicious bunch, obviously), and while I haven’t made my final decision yet, I’m leaning towards the completely insane cookie stuffed cookie. Behold, an Oreo stuffed chocolate chip:

You just make a cookie dough ball around the center cookie, so simple! These frankencookies have my mind spinning with all of the possibilities. I could try with Girl Scout cookies! And why stop at cookies? What about mini candy bar filling? Or- gasp- DONUT HOLE STUFFED COOKIES! Would I go completely bonkers if I then fried these babies up in the turkey fryer? Yes, I would. I would drop dead. I think I’ve already gained 10 pounds and developed diabetes just thinking about this. Anyway, I’m going to try a few and will report back! If you don’t hear from me after a few days, please send help, as I may be comatose on my kitchen floor, covered in chocolate chips.

Wrap It Up!

I love love love to give gifts, and honestly (honestly!) prefer giving to receiving. It’s so much fun to give a beautifully wrapped package, and then watch someone open a surprise you know they are going to adore. Lately, I’ve become quite ~~obsessed~~ enthusiastic about my wrapping, and wrap gifts the same way I dress- i.e. more is more is more! Out with the one sheet of flimsy Santa paper and a pre-made bow, and in with customized paper, prints, ribbons, sparkles, and accessories! Lots and lots of accessories. Use two or three ribbons, tie on an ornament or other little tchotchke, DIY personalized paper…the options are endless. As with an outfit, gift wrap doesn’t need to be matchy-matchy, it just needs to coordinate. I have no clue what I’ll end up with this year, but here is what it looked like under my tree last year

My absolute favorite wrapping stores- though a bit on the pricy side- are Paper Source and Kate’s Paperie. Or, if you happen to live someplace with a giant craft store such as Michael’s, you can really hit the DIY jackpot! For the rest of you, check out our Pinterest page for more wrapping ideas!

I’ve never met a ballet flat I didn’t like, and that goes double for the Panther. It has everything one would need in a so called basic shoe- the prints! The colors! The comfort! This is the shoe you will want to buy in multiple colors, and wear with every single item in your closet. The Panther transitions effortlessly from day to evening, and from spring, to summer, to fall. Trust me, you need a pair. Or three.

Summer Approaches, Are Your Feet Ready?

No? Well we’ve got you covered! Simply follow this four part recipe for perfectly dressed tootsies all summer long. You will need to cover the four basic summer shoe groups; flat sandal, ballet flat, work heel, and- last but certainly not least- a party heel!

First up, the flat sandal, featuring the Panthea and the Pansy. This is an essential ingredient in the summer shoe wardrobe, and will probably be your most oft worn pair. Try them with everything from cut off denim to flouncy florals, and don’t forget your bright pedicure! Both of these lovelies have an ankle strap, which is key. You already know this if you’ve ever tried running, skipping, dancing, cartwheeling, or anything other than walking in a straight line at a slow pace, whilst wearing flip flops. A girl needs her sandals to stay on her feet! They also have the teeny tiniest wedge, so you’ll get a little boost of height while keeping it cool and casual. We love the bright green on the Panthea, perfect for trying a color blocked look, and the snake print Pansy is right on trend- prints, prints, and more prints!!

I’m ahead of the game this year everybody! Mother’s Day is a full 2 weeks away, and my gift is already en route (hi mom!) I’ve already espoused the wisdom of gifting shoes- to anyone, anytime, for any occasion- and encourage you to do the same. This year, let’s step it up a bit, and give Mom shoes and someplace to wear them! Without further ado, here are my Miz Mooz for Mom picks for 2012:

Wilma

Multi colored chevron striped rafia footbed?! A sensible heel?! Comes in kelly green?! This shoe has Mom written all over it, and is perfect to wear to brunch!

Panther

An adorable and easy to wear ballet flat, and oh-so-hip in bright yellow. You may want to get a pair for yourself while you’re at it, and spend the day with Mom strolling through a park or flea market.

Sailor

This pop of cobalt goes with everything, and is sure to make Mom feel sassy. Treat her to a Latin dance class!

Name That Shoe, Good Manners Edition

I’m a sucker for outdated sartorial rules, such as not wearing white after Labor Day, and matching one’s shoes and handbag. Of course, I never follow these rules, but just love that they exist! One set of rules I do follow, are those of Emily Post. She was the original maven of manners; her book Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, and at Home was published in 1922 and is now up to it’s eighteenth edition. Side note, I’m on a continual search for an original copy, and once I have the shelf space want to collect all 18. But that’s another story! Do you ever find yourself in an etiquette quandary? This new edition answers your standard fare (never wear white to a wedding), and tackles modern day dilemmas, including the manners of texting, tweeting, and Facebooking. So, in her honor, we have the Emily: A subtle, two toned pump, with a moderate heel, sling back, and pleasant buttons. I think Ms. Post would approve!

Oh right, SPRING! My second favorite season has arrived, and here’s what I’m looking forward to wearing the most:

Bright shoes and nails! Besides shoes, the Miz Mooz ladies are also obsessed with nail polish, specifically Essie. This conversation actually happened in the office today:

C:”Ooh, great nails! Is that Lilacism?”

A: “No, this is Nice is Nice, I was going to pick Lilacism, or the new one, have you seen She’s Picture Perfect? I really like it with these shoes [ed note, they were the yellow Panther]”

C:” Yeah that’s a good color, but I prefer a more matte finish. My fave right now is Mint Candy Apple”

L: “Oh I love that one!”

And so on and so forth for a few more minutes, the men of the office were completely baffled. The moral of this story, wear bright nails with bright shoes, you’ll love it! Pairings for your consideration:

Happy New Year! Here’s what we’re up to for 2012

You may think that here in Miz Mooz land all we do is make shoes, and while it certainly feels that way most of the time, we do other super fun things too! Here’s a smattering of what we’re getting up to in 2012:

Running And not in some short lived New Years resolution sort of way, but in a fancy training watch wearing, early morning in the freezing cold, jumping over piles of snow type way. We’re members of New York Road Runners, and are going to be running races all year and- fingers crossed- the NYC Marathon in November!

Reading I have an ever increasing stack of books waiting to be read, and am looking forward to spending snowy winter weekends getting to the bottom if it. The newest addition is Swamplandia! by Karen Russell, which is about a family of Alligator wrestlers. Enough said!

Eating 2011 saw the addition of two bakers to the team, so we’re looking forward to the dueling cookies and cupcakes in the office, and the weekly Bake-Off that I have so generously offered to judge.

Listening I’m warming up my vocal cords for the enthusiastic singalongs that will be happening when my most anticipated new albums of 2012 drop. My indie darlings Chairlift, The Magnetic Fields, Guided by Voices (yes, you read that right!), and Andrew Bird‘s are the ones I’m most looking forward to. Cheers!

Gift Guide: Part 4.5, Christmas Tree Time!

The end of my holiday shopping is in sight! I have one more gift to buy, and it’s for me! Because I’ve been super most of the year, I’m treating myself to a pair of the September, which I’ll be sporting this weekend when I get my Christmas tree! The holiday theme at my house is a rustic winter wonderland- think cozy cabin in the woods and Pendelton blankets. Also, pinecones! My apartment is full of D.I.Y. sparkly pinecones. Anyway, in keeping with that look, I’m wearing my new Septembers to ~~chop down a tree all lumberjack-like~~ lug a pre-chopped tree from the stand on the corner! Then I’ll make hot toddys and eat popcorn balls and decorate my tree with the aforementioned sparkly pinecones and wait for Santa. I suggest you do the same!

Marathon Monday, or, Wear Neon, Run Fast

Let’s take a cue for our Spring 12 footwear from some of the incredible athletes who ran yesterday’s NYC Marathon! I’m thrilled to report, Neon is back! Holla!

Gorgeous view of the first wave of runners from our balcony in Brooklyn.

Check out these neon shoes!! The Elite men sprint (for real) by us near mile 6, that’s 2nd place finisher Emmanuel Mutai dead center in red, and 2009 winner Meb Keflezighi on the right in the orange hat. Hiding behind Meb, is this year’s champ, and record breaker on this course, Geoffrey Mutai. You can really only see his (neon) sneakers.

And in a subtler show of neon, Erin Ward zooms by in bright orange laces.

There you have it, undeniable proof that neon is where it’s at for 2012! Marathon running optional.

I’m having a costume dilemma. I can’t seem to come up with the right shoes! My super awesome super secret costume doesn’t require specific footwear, and I am feeling stymied by my options. With that in mind, perhaps next year I’ll start with the shoes, like one of these characters!

Trick or Treat!

I’ve always loved Halloween, and though I’m more than twice the age of most trick or treaters these days, I’m still an enthusiastic participant! I put forth a huge effort creating my costume every year, and while I won’t give it away just yet, I will give you some easy ideas for your own!

A Flapper! Put on your prohibition era- best and brush up on your Charleston, in the Limon you’ll be able to dance all night! Optional accessories: Gallon of moonshine, and a gat-weilding date.

Little Red Riding Hood: Top your favorite LBD with a red cloak, and add the Siri for some extra flare! Like your Halloween a bit more gory? Get some fake blood and go as Little Red Riding Hood post-wolf attack.

I seem to have struck a nerve with some fall lovers thanks to my recent post derrding the changing of the seasons, so I offer a formal mea culpa in the form of Fall Faves! (ed note- the pronouncing of Fall Faves! should be accompanied by jazz hands). Starting with the showpiece of my collection, the Franka. I’m a lover off all things heeled, two toned, and laced up, so no doubt that the Franka is high on my list. It is a little business in my otherwise whimsical wardrobe, giving that sexy secretary vibe that I cannot get enough of. I’m wearing mine with pencil skirts and chiffon tops, or dressing it down with boyfriend jeans and striped cardigans. To further illustrate my love of the Franka, I made this collage. Hello!

I’ve said this before, and stand firm in my conviction that crisp air is not refreshing, and the turning leaves are not charming. Years searching and I still find myself without that perfect weight jacket for chilly evenings, and I don’t look good in hats. I do, however, look good in boots, and the need for new boots is the only thing that has kept me from decamping and migrating south all these years. This month has seen an influx of invitations to outdoor events in my mailbox. Everyone has something to celebrate, and they all want to do so outside- in a garden, or park, or backyard, or on a beach- terrains that are none to friendly to my footwear. Not to mention walking in heels is virtually impossible on these soft surfaces, let alone dancing- and lord knows- I love to dance! What’s a high heel wearing gal to do? May I present to you…the Wedge. I am convinced the mighty wedge was invented by a woman on a mission, with garden parties and beach weddings on her calendar, and nothing to wear on her feet! A wedge gives the height and fancy-factor of a heel, but with a flat and solid sole that won’t get stuck in the ground. Bonus- they’re comfortable! It’s a footwear miracle! I also know that one woman’s shoe dream is another’s shoe nightmare- what on earth does one wear with these wild shoes?! My easy answer- EVERYTHING! Gone are the days when your handbag must match your shoes and lipstick ladies, so lighten up, stop being all matchy-matchy, and rock some rad shoes! The most important thing to remember- don’t be afraid of colors and patterns! A bright shoe does not necessitate a black or monochrome outfit. The bolder, the better, if you ask me. Name That Shoe

Ever wonder how we name our shoes? I bet it’s been keeping you awake at night for ages, right? Losing valuable slumber time, tearing your hair out, just can’t stand it any more, you must know the secret? Well relax, cause I’m gonna tell ya…I make them up! Well, it’s not actually that simple.

There are a lot of shoes each season, I would say we create samples of twice as many shoes as we actually produce, and each one needs a name. So, to reign myself in and provide a little structure (a little structure never hurt anyone), I start with a theme. To date, Miz Mooz shoes have been named after NYC streets and neighborhoods (Tribeca, Bowery), NYC restaurants (Resto, Waverly…yummy…), authors and literary characters (Alcott, Dorian), as well as friends and family (Dorothy, Sophia…love you Grandmas!), and even a cat!

After all of that, the Spring 11 collection was easy…musicians and composers. There are some obvious ones in the bunch…hello Elton! And some not so obvious ones, like Nova and one of my personal faves, Hadley, named after Tony Hadley. For those of you who were living under a rock in 1983, or have never watched VH1 classics, Tony Hadley is the lead singer of that awesomely awesome 80′s band Spandau Ballet. For your Tuesday listening pleasure, please take a moment to enjoy Spandau Ballet performing their much loved hit True.

Sock it to me!

I’m wearing socks with sandals. What? Oh, yeah, socks with sandals. Are you horrified? Kinda? Please, hear me out. I’m not talking the tube socks-Birkenstock combo from the glory days of junior high school; I’m talking cute florals, bright colored fishnets, and argyle! Man, do I love me some argyle socks. A little bit kindergarten, a little bit nerdy teen, a little bit stuffy businessman, and a whole lotta fun! Especially in unexpected color combos and anything neon. But I digress.

For me, the appeal of the dreaded sock/sandal combo is twofold: First, it is late March -well into spring shoe shopping season- and still too cold to sport my new strappy and open toe styles without freezing my little piggies. Solution? Socks. So simple, so brilliant, sooo happening. Second, I own some delicate, flirty, adorable, not cheap socks, which spend all their time hidden under boots. These babies need their time in the sun! Aside from brief moments walking through airport security, my favorite socks never see the light of day. I owe it to them, and the world!

The key to making the look crazy sexy cool as opposed to just crazy, is to keep the socks light in weight and pattern, gym socks need not apply. Pair them with a simple yet substantial sandal, thick straps and solid colors on a heel, and you’re good to go. Oh, and please make sure the elastic on the ankle isn’t too tight, no one wants sausagey ankles.

I’ve already started buying socks expressly for this purpose- a pair in an orange and yellow ditsy floral print to go with dark green suede platform wedges, *swoon*. I also want something to wear with my Miz Mooz Heather…I’m thinking argyle.

I just flew in from Chicago, and boy are my arms tired! Seriously. I’ve been lugging two 60 pound bags of shoes across the country for the last month, showing our Fall 2011 collection to buyers from all your favorite stores!

First stop was the FN Platform show in Las Vegas, which is the biggest trade show in the biz, and the most fun! Miz Mooz went all out, we brought the whole team, our designer, a shoe model, and even our Canadians! For those of you who are not buyers for retail shoe stores, here’s the deal (pay attention, there may be a quiz); brands all get together in a convention center, set up a booth, and buyers come by to see the line and place orders for their stores. We work a season out, so in February 2011 we show shoes for Fall 2011, and in August 2011 we show shoes for Spring 2012. Got it? Anyway, here is a shot of our booth, that’s Jeff hard at work and me hard at…texting? …playing Angry Birds..?

You know we know how to party, we know we know how to party, and now everyone knows we know how to party! The proof, my friends, was in our raging bowling event we threw last week at Bowlmor Lanes in Times Square. The concept was simple enough. We wanted to get all our best editor/blogger/fashion friends in one place to show off our newest collections, so we rounded them all up and took them bowling! The lanes we chose in Bowlmor’s 90,000 square foot space had a retro Times-Square-in the 70’s-vibe, complete with neon lights and a reference to Linda Lovelace, which, it turns out, is very Miz Mooz 2011! Add free shoes, free booze, and some showgirly models, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a Thursday evening!

Who knew the NYC fashion contingent was filled with so many stellar bowlers?!! Many in heels no less!! I, on the other hand, am only slightly embarrassed to admit that I am a lousy bowler. I threw (is that even the right verb?) exactly two balls- an orange one that went straight to the gutter on the left side of the lane, and a pink one that went straight to the gutter on the right side of the lane. I promptly retired, quitting while I was ahead, and proceeded to chat up everyone in the joint. Of course, a party isn’t a party unless someone tries to crash it, and we had our fair share of attempts. Kudos to our PR team who manned the guest list and the bouncers who kept the place free of riff raff! Maybe next time we’ll put you on the list…until then, check out these pictures!

Resolutions?

We’re well into 2011, and all but one of my resolutions have been refashioned, reformed, or flat out retired. Going to the gym everyday? Umm, how about going to the gym every week? Laying off the candy? How about laying off the candy before lunch? Cooking my own dinner, and not eating out? Maybe only eating out once a day…Clearly I need to resolve to work on my resolutions. The one I have had no problem sticking to is the fun one, to dress up everyday! It isn’t as easy as it sounds, especially considering it is zero degrees outside and seemingly 45 feet of snow on every corner, not exactly tights and heels weather. I have solved this problem with a good pair of snow boots, and a drawer full of “office shoes”. Filled with suede, and satin, and sparky heels, this repurposed drawer in my desk (who needs all those files anyway?) will be my saving grace until the big spring thaw! I highly recommend you get your own.

When does many shoes become too many shoes? Never, if you ask my right-brained self, though in reality, the answer seems to be: When they no longer fit in the closet! I’ve been stumbling around the shoes, boots, sandals, wedges, stilettos- you name it- that have been littering the floor of my teeny NYC apartment for far too long, and finally decided to do something about it. It was really becoming dangerous, one mis step onto a gorgeous bordeaux riding boot whilst wearing a 4 inch platform, and I would be a goner! Safety first people! Clearly getting rid of some shoes was not an option. So, I enlisted my Zipcar driving, power drill owning, handy-as-all-get-out friend, and we made the pilgrimage to Ikea in search of a solution.

I don’t know if you’ve had the pleasure that is an Ikea trip on a Sunday right before Christmas, but let me tell you, it is not for the faint of heart! I would say a good 75% of New York’s inhabitants were present, including many pushy old ladies and even more screaming babies. Exciting! Anyway, after vetoing what seemed like hundreds of shoe storage options that were not quite right for various reasons (good for shoes but bad for booties! Works for a pump but not for wedges! Too big, too small, too plasticy, too woody, too…) we headed for the exit. Well, that’s not exactly true, first we headed for the food court and ate Sweedish meatballs, then we headed for the exit. That’s when I had the brilliant idea that has transformed my life. Shelves! I bought shelves and brackets that fit perfectly on the wall behind my bedroom door! Those pairs of shoes that were living on the floor, threatening to take me out at every turn, now have their own home! Perfectly accessible, but not intrusive. It’s a beautiful thing. And, since they were from Ikea, they were totally cheap! Which leaves me with extra cash! For more shoes!

It’s a mere seven days until Christmas and, per usual, I haven’t started my holiday shopping yet. Unless, of course, you count the things I have purchased for myself (it’s ok! I’ve been very very good this year). I’ve also been very very busy, you know…dinners…holiday parites…nap taking…seeing Black Swan in the theater twice… Anyway, that means this weekend I will be braving the elements, pounding the pavement, and shopping! To avoid the “…til I drop” part of the equasion, I will be wearing the newest addition to my Miz Mooz collection. Freshly purchased, and ready to take their maiden voyage on my feet…the Kimmi! The molded rubber heel is perfect for a long day of stomping around, and the fuzzy lining will keep me toasty- a must, as the little weather icon on my desktop shows snowflakes and a big blue number 26. Translation= COLD!! Come to think of it, the Kimmi does happen to be the cutest shoe around, and would make an excellent gift for anyone…maybe I won’t need to do that much shopping after all! Who wants to see Black Swan tomorrow?

Last week we had our first snow of the season here in NYC, an event that historically banishes cute, feminine, shoes to the back of the closet. There they sit, forgotten and forlorn, until spring. Replaced by ubiquitous, brown, fur-lined monstrosities (I’m not naming names), or rubber boots that are more suited to ice fishing than cocktail hour. I, for one, frequent many more cocktail hours than I do ice fishing expeditions, and do not want to risk loosing a toe to frostbite in order to rock some killer shoes. Though, I wonder if there is a discount on pedicures for anything less than 10 toes? Anyway… What’s a girl to do?! Miz Mooz, that’s what! Our fall line is chock full of adorable, warm, party-dress appropriate styles that won’t make you look like you travel by dogsled. My top pick is the Howser for day- it’s a boot on an of-the-moment clog! Lined with politically correct and cruelty free and still super warm faux shearling! If you’re feeling a little fancy pants, try the Sabrina. It’s also lined with shearling, and has been endorsed by Oprah. Oprah, people. Oprah. It’s time to start making your spring shoes jealous!

I had the pleasure of spending Thanksgiving in Chicago this year, and despite the two days I spent bed ridden (of course I would get sick on vacation), and the brutal cold (seriously, they don’t call it the Windy City for nothin), I had a great time! I managed to peel myself off the couch, away from both the TV and my bottomless glass of wine long enough to visit Paula Eisen at her store Click Shoes! It was the second best part of my trip (a very close second to the amazing Thanksgiving dinner- thanks Ashley and Terry!). I played “serious journalist” and asked Paula some questions about the store.

It is the most adorable, friendly neighborhood; driven by involved residents and local retailers that include some of the best shopping, eating, and barhopping Chicago has to offer. The Southport style is preppy casual with a stylish twist. Watch out for the stroller and puppy traffic!

What else would you do here?

Next door to Click is the historic Music Box Theater. Catch independent, classic movies, cult classics, the best variety of film festivals or a big time move premiere. Wrigley Field is just a few blocks away. Go check out a Cubs game or just enjoy the great game day vibe that spills over onto Southport. Or head down to Schuba’s to see some phenomenal music.

Who is your main customer?

We cater to all women of every age group. Click’s goal is comfort with style for a mid-range price. Isn’t that what everyone dreams of? Our selection covers the classics with a big dose of the hottest fashions and interesting finds. And my personal favorite, fresh twists on the classics. We do carry a few of those slightly painful but- too gorgeous we must have them to showoff -heels. Sometimes they’re too amazing to pass up!

Our customers love that our clothing is fun and functional for their lifestyles and that all of our jewelry and art work are made by local artists. We really do know our repeat customers well and what they like. That includes the daughter that just grew enough to shop in a woman’s store, her mother, 25 year old sister, and even grandma too (BTW, even the dogs are welcome at Click). The lifestyles of all these women are also included in our decisions. We want our shoes to be worn, not forgotten in the back of a closet.

Do you host any events?

Our events are so fun! The Southport Corridor as a whole hosts many neighborhood events throughout the year that we always participate in. We also host, almost weekly, if not daily in our busy seasons, fundraisers for local charities, schools and private events. Our customer hostess’ have the choice of donating 15% of each purchase to the group of their choice or pass on a 15% discount to their guests. Our parties typically run from 7-10pm and at no cost to the guests or hosts. We provide complimentary light appetizers, desserts, wine, beer, and champagne. We customize every event with different trunk shows, entertainment, or pampering services upon request.

Getting to know you…

I’ve been pressuring our retailers and customers to let me share their personal stories with the whole of the internet, so it is only fitting that I should contribute a little somethin somethin. Here it is, stream-of-consciousness style:
I’m a retired professional dancer. While I no longer dance on the concert stage, I do dance many other places, including but not limited to; subway platforms, beaches, back seats of moving vehicles, rooftops in Brooklyn, and picnic tables. I love the artist once again known as Prince, cats, bright colored Essie nail polish, and my job. I eat a peanut butter sandwich for lunch most of the time, and am not sick of it. I especially enjoy said sandwich with a cup of coffee. These days I’ve been tucking all my T shirts in, and really like this look with rolled up boyfriend jeans and high heels (Miz Mooz, of course.) I think it’s the perfect combo of fancy and laisse-faire. My hair has been the following colors and one point or another: dark brown, light brown, bleach blonde, and pink. On November 7th I will be running in the New York City Marathon, and am training like crazy, wish me luck! Currently my screen saver is a Richard Prince image of a cowboy. I love cowboys. I’m thinking of changing it, though haven’t yet found anything that works. Suggestions? I am an enthusiastic participant in Halloween costume contests, and usually win. My favorite color is sparkly purple, and my favorite flavor is red.

Spotlight on ShoeFly!

Welcome to our brand-spankin-new feature, the Retailer Spotlight, in which we introduce you to our beloved retailers, giving them a chance to shine. Miz Mooz can be found in some of the coolest stores around, and we want everyone to know about it!

First up, ShoeFly, which boasts 3 stores in the D.C. area, an online boutique, and an owner gracious enough to be the guinea pig for this feature…thanks Jen!

The first hint that ShoeFly in Arlington, VA isn’t your average shoe boutique is the 9 foot tall black and white photo of local rocker Jon Shaffer that serves as the back wall of the retail store. That is, of course, if you can pull your eyes away from all the great shoes long enough to take notice!

As a transplant to Washington, DC, Jen Marfino was inspired by a longtime dream of owning her own business, and the vision of her sister Sue, who has two successful stores in their native Buffalo, NY. Jen left her position in tech sales and opened ShoeFly in 2003 on a mission to provide unique and wearable shoes at price points that were not over the top. A directive which, along with Jen’s funky aesthetic and all-around-awesomeness (she rollerblades! She makes a mean manicotti!), deem her a perfect retailer for Miz Mooz.

ShoeFly has now expanded to three retail locations, situated in neighborhoods that can be described as Urban Villages, where one can do three of my favorite things- eat, drink, and shop! These walkable enclaves of both independent and national retailers, restaurants, and nightlife offerings attract a range of shoppers, ShoeFly caters to women (and some men) ages anywhere from 14 to 82, who all share in the love for great shoes! ShoeFly also offers parties dubbed “Shop Like a Rockstar”, private events with a portion of proceeds going to a charity of choice.

Fishing for compliments, I asked Jen why she loved Miz Mooz for ShoeFly, and she responded, “We love Miz Mooz because you blaze your own trail”, and the feeling is mutual! She also cited our different yet wearable styles, classic silhouettes, and creative embellishments as reasons to keep coming back to Miz Mooz. When asked what Miz Mooz shoe she couldn’t possibly live without, Jen gave a special shout out to the classic Casablanca boot- holla!

New York City based footwear brand Miz Mooz didn’t have to look too far for inspiration when creating its spring collection and what better way to celebrate the warm weather season than a trip to Coney Island? The popular summertime spot’s vibrant colors and energy of the amusement park and boardwalk translated into this collection of various shoes ranging from metallic sandals, studded clogs, to rugged cowboy boots. The unique and fun styles really caught our eye, which led us to satisfy our curiosity about the private label brand. If you’re just as intrigued, check out what we asked Cheryl Matson of Miz Mooz. She tells us about the hottest trends of the season, how to wear them, the company’s future plans, and gives us a peek at the top 10 must-haves from the Spring ’10 collection. Read what she had to say.

Running With Heels: Tell us more about the inspiration behind the Spring 2010 Miz Mooz collection?

Cheryl Matson: The buzz words while creating our Spring 2010 collection were fun and color, which lead us pretty quickly to Coney Island as our main source of inspiration. The bright vibrant colors and quirky energy of Coney Island’s amusement park and boardwalk lent incredibly well to our sense of design and love of vintage styling, and encouraged us to play with color, texture, pattern, and trim. We are a decidedly New York brand, and it felt apropos to pay homage to such an iconic New York landmark. Of course, we also had to take a field trip out there for “inspirational” Nathan’s Hot Dogs and rides on the Cyclone!

RWH: How would you describe the Miz Mooz woman?

CM: Miz Mooz appeals to women of all stripes, though there are a few traits that especially draw people to our brand. The Miz Mooz woman appreciates unique design and quality materials. While she stays on top of trends, she is far from a slave to fashion, and would rather set trends than follow them. She is sophisticated, but definitely has a good sense of humor and doesn’t take herself too seriously.

RWH: If you had to choose the top 3 must-have styles from the S/S collection, which styles would you choose?

CM: Our clog construction has been incredibly hot this season, the Hazel being number 1. It’s is a great throw back look with a modern feel. Our classic Miz Mooz shoe, the Devi, was another great style. I’d also include the Vento and the Histeric, two shoes that are more fashion forward, and have been blowing off the shelves.

RWH: What would you say the biggest trends are for the season and how does Miz Mooz translate that for an everyday look?

CM: Clogs and menswear inspired styles are huge this season, as well as going into fall, and are two categories that can easily veer from fashion to costume. The Miz Mooz versions (Hazel and Rain in the clogs, and the Histeric oxford) are subtle in their design details, with moderate lasts and our classic rich leathers so they avoid looking like they were swiped from your parent’s closets. The key is a slight nod to the defining characteristics of each style, as opposed to an outright copy.

RWH: There seems to be many great vintage and retro-inspired shoes in the spring collection. Is old new again?

CM: Until we start growing 35 toes, old will always be new. No one is reinventing the shoe, instead we look for ways to improve on comfort and fit, and keep the consumer interested with unexpected details that they won’t find elsewhere.
RWH: What factors do the designers keep in mind when coming up with each collection every season?

CM: We always want to build on our previous successes and create the shoes that our loyal customers keep coming back for, year after year. In addition, to stay relevant we try to create things we haven’t done before, and continue to experiment with new shapes and styles. Whenever we create a new design, we have to ask is this Miz Mooz? Staying true to our roots while moving forward is a constant balancing act.

RWH: Any plans to expand into accessories? Any other future projects you’d like to share with our readers?

CM: We’ve just launched a few men’s styles, and are experimenting with handbags for a capsule collection next spring. We also have a killer new website, and are expanding our presence in the social media world, so please friend us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and read our blog!

This is it kids. The Friday before Memorial Day weekend, the mother of all holiday weekends. The one that says “summer is here”! Summer. The best and most fleeting of seasons. Beach trips, and bike rides, and hours lounging in the park, and dining al fresco. Women across the country are revamping their looks accordingly. Jeans turn into teeny cut off shorts, perfectly blown out hair becomes a sloppy pony tail, and rubber flip flops become de rigueur. And this, my friends, is my problem. Why the rubber flip flops?! They belong on the beach, that’s it. I’m sure I will get at least one piece of hate mail, but come on ladies! Your feet deserve better. Why torture yourself wearing something non-cute (it’s true), that leaves your precious toes so close to the grime of the sidewalk? Frankly, it is frightening. Now, I’ve heard all the arguments- they’re so comfortable –um, no, they’re not. Or- they’re quick and easy to put on- as if anyone is so busy they don’t have time to bother with a strap or a buckle. This summer I encourage you to step it up a bit. If you insist on a flat, why not try the Bonita? It is available in subtle snake print metallics, and closes with a zipper. How about the Alto, with an itsy bitsy square heel, and a non threatening buckle? If you’re game to take my challenge further and go for some height (I dare you) check out the Remi. It is still a casual sandal, but with a gorgeous woven leather strap, and will look hot hot hot with those cut offs! Your feet do so much for you, now is the time to treat them right. Life is short, wear great shoes!

Who, Me?! Obsessed?!

What is it with women and shoes anyway?! While I hate to admit it, this is one stereotype that is pretty spot on. And, I may add, not a bad thing!! I may be on the extreme end of the spectrum, as I’m in “the biz” and all, but even my sisters in arms who can count their pairs on one hand will agree- there is no joy in shopping quite like a brand new pair of shoes. You spy them on the shelf, and your breath quickens. You pick them up and turn them over in your hands as a nervous smile starts to creep onto your face. Waiting for the salesperson to bring your size is agony. Then the moment arrives when you slip your foot into the shoe, and all is right with the world. For some women it is in finding the perfect, comfy flat. For others it is the bedazzled sky high stiletto. Or a suede wedge. Or a patterned pump. Or a flat, knee high boot with a buckle in the perfect shade of Bordeaux that will look soooo good with that old pair of jeans/skirt/mini dress in the back of the closet! Or…ahem… all of the above. Shoes don’t care that the daily trip to the gym has been replaced with the daily trip to the bakery, they still fit, and they still look spectacular! So let’s celebrate our (healthy and completely normal) obsession with our footwear. Let us bathe in the beauty of our boots! Let us bask in the shine of our stilettos! Let us frolic in the fabulosity of our flats! Say it with me now…shoes…shoes…Shoes…Shoes…SHOES…SHOES!

Canoodling with movie stars and hob-nobbing with heads of state and international dignitaries. Jetting (privately, natch) to Belize for the weekend, just ‘cause. It’s May, and as I was just reminded, Mother’s Day is right around the corner. This weekend to be exact. Uh oh. But never fear! Miz Mooz is here! I’m a nice, sweet, well behaved, girl. I love kittens, cupcakes, and the color pink. I wear florals, pastels, and heart shaped jewelry. Get the idea? Lately though, I’ve been feeling the need to toughen up my look- less sugar, more spice- and I have found the key. It’s the Vento by Miz Mooz! Edgy but not scary, this is the sandal of my rebel-in-training dreams. The stacked wood heel puts me at just the right height to reach the top shelf (the one with the candy!) in my kitchen. Thick leather straps, trimmed with zippers, give me major street cred while still offering a peak at my hot pink toenails. The Vento works perfectly for daytime into evening, and they are so comfortable that I’m actually happy to keep them on all day. There are those of you who may think you’ve got enough spice in your look, and to you I say WRONG! GO GET THE VENTO NOW! How’s that for tough?

In case you didn’t get the memo-email-text-tweet- or whatever it is these days- cowboy boots are back; back in a big big way. We’re talking everything from rugged and distressed, to shiny and metallic. John Wayne to Rhinestone Cowboy. Rodeo to Rodeo Drive. And you need a pair. Now.

Not to worry! Miz Mooz has the most lovely and amazing cowboy (well, cowgirl) boots you will find, and trust me, I’ve looked. Miz Mooz has made their cowboy boots modern pieces, with a nostalgic feel that manages to be neither too retro nor old fashioned. The leathers on these beauties are both tough and tender; they will stand up in the Wild West, and look divine in the big city. There are punchy candy colors, and vintage distressed finishes. Snake printed and top stitched styles, studs, and grommets, and zippers, oh my! Because they are made by Miz Mooz, you know they are comfortable! They have a cushy (yes, cushy is a word) foot bed, perfect for stomping around all day, and into the evening.

I’m wearing mine with skinny jeans and big wool socks now, and can’t wait to pair them with flirty dresses and cardigans in the spring. I’d even do them with denim cut offs and a simple tank and let the boots have the spotlight.

I do have to warn you, the decision on which style to pick is going to be difficult. Maybe not Sophie’s Choice difficult, but certainly no walk in the park, or around the ranch, as the case may be. It would be easier if there was a women’s magazine-style multiple choice quiz to help narrow it down. You know the ones I’m talking about; if you answer mostly A’s you’re a tough lady with a sensitive side- the Cozumel is for you! Mostly B’s? You’re the vivacious outgoing type- try the Cabana in gold snake print! Though priced well under $200, why not pick two pairs? You’re going to need them after all, these are definitely the boot of the season…and next season, and next season, and the season after that…What are you waiting for? Happy Shopping!
